NEUROINFLAMMATION
Dysfunctional microglia facilitate deterioration of the retina
Microglia are the resident innate immune cells of the central nervous system. Under normal conditions, microglia support a healthy microenvironment in the retina. In disease, microglia become activated and promote a toxic, pro-inflammatory environment. This is known as neuroinflammation. Left unchecked, neuroinflammation can result in irreversible deterioration of the retina.
Retinal ganglion cell death and optic nerve degeneration
Beyond glaucoma
Neuroinflammation is associated with multiple back of the eye diseases. FireCyte’s approach may address unmet needs in several ocular neurodegenerative disorders. In addition, there is the potential to explore broader neuroscience application outside of ophthalmology.
